Frequently Asked Questions

  • Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) is an evidenced-based practice for treating young children (0-6 years) and their caregivers. This intervention supports family strengths and relationships, helps families heal and grow after stressful experiences, and respects family and cultural values.

CPP can help all families of young children and may be particularly helpful for children who have been through scary and painful events such as loss, separation, medical procedures, abuse or violence in the home. CPP can help with difficult behaviors in children, changing caregivers, families who have physical or mental health issues, and for caregivers who would like help with parenting and child-parent relationship.

The intervention is relationship based, which means that a beloved caregiver will accompany and participate in the treatment with the child. This model has been researched and found to be effective in creating change and supporting relationships.

  • Reflective supervision is an approach that supports various models of relationship-based service delivery. The approach ncludes regular meetings, a collaborative relational approach, and an emphasis on reflection. Reflective supervision can be used across disciplines, systems of care and service models for children and families (Heffron and Murch, 2010).

The ultimate goal of reflective practice is to improve the quality of services for children and their families. Often providers are faced with trauma of the families they work with and this trauma can trigger their own pain and suffering. The experience the provider brings to the relationship can get in the way of working effectively with families unless there is a venue to explore, understand, and distill the negative or difficult emotions elicited from the work (Shahmoon Shannok,2009)

  • Facilitating Attuned Interactions- or FAN’s ultimate goal is strengthening the provider-parent relationship, resulting in parents who are attuned to their children and ready to try new ways of relating to them.

  • from the COSP website-”Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you. The Circle of Security® Parenting™ program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.

Using the COSP™ model developed by the Circle of Security originators, our trained Facilitators work with parents and care-givers to help them to understand their child’s emotional world by learning to read emotional needs, support their child’s ability to successfully manage emotions, enhance the development of their child's self esteem, and honor the innate wisdom and desire for their child to be secure.”
